Google Search is no longer divided neatly between ads and organic results. AI Overviews can now appear alongside paid placements, cited sources, and traditional listings, creating a more complex search experience.

For advertisers, this changes more than SERP layout. A customer may consume an AI-generated comparison or explanation before deciding whether to click an ad.

The question is therefore not whether AI Overviews or Google Ads will replace one another. It is how paid search strategy needs to adapt when both influence the same customer journey.

What Happens When AI Overviews and Google Ads Share a SERP?

When AI Overviews and Google Ads appear together, users can encounter several layers of information before deciding what to click.

Google allows eligible ads to appear above or below AI Overviews and, in supported markets, within the AI-generated experience itself. Ads shown inside AI Overviews can consider both the original query and the context of the generated response when determining relevance.

A commercial SERP may therefore include:

  • Google Ads;
  • an AI-generated response;
  • cited websites;
  • traditional organic results;
  • other Search features.

This matters because paid ads no longer compete only with other advertisers. They also appear alongside information that may influence what the customer values before the click.

“The SERP is becoming a much more layered experience. An advertiser may have strong ad visibility, but the user could already be forming an opinion based on the AI Overview and the sources Google presents around it. Paid search strategy has to account for the entire search experience, not just where the ad ranks.”

Why Are AI Overviews Appearing on Commercial Searches?

AI Overviews are moving beyond purely informational queries. A Semrush analysis of more than 600,000 U.S. desktop keywords found that the share of commercial-intent SERPs containing AI Overviews increased by an average of 71% between November 2025 and April 2026.

The same research found that Google Ads and AI Overviews were appearing together roughly twice as often as a year earlier.

This is important because commercial searches often happen during evaluation:

  • Which company is best for this need?
  • What is the difference between these solutions?
  • Which provider has experience in my industry?
  • What should I evaluate before requesting a quote?

These are exactly the types of questions that benefit from AI-generated comparison and synthesis.

Transactional searches behave differently. In the same study, AI Overview presence for transactional queries decreased by approximately 5%. That suggests AI Overviews may have their greatest impact during research and consideration, before the customer reaches the final conversion stage.

How Do AI Overviews Change Paid Search Strategy?

The biggest change is that marketers need to consider what happens before the paid click.

Take a query such as: best marketing agency for manufacturers.

A traditional paid search model might look like: keyword → ad → landing page → lead.

The current journey can be more complex: query → AI Overview → cited information → ads → organic results → further research → conversion

By the time someone clicks an ad, the AI Overview may already have influenced what that person expects from a provider. For high-value keywords, advertisers should therefore review more than CPC and ad position. They should also understand:

  • whether an AI Overview appears;
  • what criteria the answer emphasizes;
  • which companies or websites are cited;
  • what competitors are advertising;
  • whether the landing page addresses the same decision factors.

The objective is not to rewrite campaigns around every AI-generated response. It is to understand the information environment surrounding the company’s most valuable searches.

Why Paid Search and SEO Need to Work Together

AI Overviews make the separation between SEO and PPC less useful. A company can potentially appear in multiple places during the same search journey: through an ad, an organic listing, or information cited in an AI-generated response. This creates an opportunity to coordinate search strategy.

SEO teams can identify which commercially important queries trigger AI Overviews and what information Google surfaces. Paid media teams can determine which of those searches justify advertising investment. Content teams can make sure landing pages and supporting resources address the questions buyers are using to compare providers.

“Paid and organic teams can’t treat the SERP as two separate environments anymore. If an expensive keyword is triggering ads, an AI Overview, and organic results at the same time, we need to understand what role each placement plays. Sometimes paid should capture the immediate opportunity while content builds credibility earlier in the decision.”

For high-ticket B2B, industrial, marine, healthcare, and service businesses, this coordination is particularly important because one qualified opportunity can justify significant search investment.

Which Keywords Should Advertisers Monitor?

Not every keyword deserves the same level of analysis. The priority should be commercially valuable searches where AI-generated results and paid competition overlap.

Marketers can evaluate:

  • Commercial value: Is the query connected to an important product or service?
  • CPC: Is the company paying significantly to compete?
  • Conversion quality: Does the query generate qualified leads or revenue?
  • AI Overview presence: Is Google frequently generating an AI response?
  • Competitive visibility: Which brands appear in ads, organic results, and AI citations?

A low-volume keyword associated with a high-value purchase may be more strategically important than a high-volume query that produces little revenue.

This is why search volume alone should not determine which AI Overview SERPs deserve attention.

How Should Marketers Measure Performance?

Google Ads metrics still matter:

  • impressions;
  • clicks;
  • CPC;
  • conversion rate;
  • qualified leads;
  • customer acquisition cost;
  • conversion value.

But AI Overviews create additional context.

Marketing teams can also monitor:

  • AI Overview presence for priority queries;
  • whether the brand appears as a cited source;
  • organic rankings;
  • branded search growth;
  • competitor visibility;
  • assisted conversions;
  • AI referral traffic where measurable.

The goal is not to create another vanity metric around AI exposure.

What matters is whether changes in the SERP affect cost, qualified demand, conversion behavior, and revenue.

“The mistake would be measuring AI Overviews separately from business performance. If a SERP is changing, we want to know whether that change affects click behavior, conversion quality, CPC, and ultimately revenue. The AI feature matters because it can influence the journey, not because appearing next to it is automatically a win.”

What Should Advertisers Do Now?

Companies do not need to rebuild their Google Ads strategy around AI Overviews. They do need better visibility into how their most valuable SERPs are changing.

A practical approach is:

  1. Identify high-value search terms. Focus on searches tied to qualified leads and revenue.
  2. Review the SERP. Check whether AI Overviews appear and what information they emphasize.
  3. Compare paid, organic, and AI visibility. Understand where the brand and competitors appear.
  4. Evaluate landing pages. Make sure they answer the questions influencing the buying decision.
  5. Strengthen conversion tracking. Give Google reliable signals about what a valuable conversion actually looks like.
  6. Coordinate SEO and PPC. Use insights from both channels to improve search strategy.

Google is also introducing more AI into campaign management itself through products such as AI Max for Search campaigns, which can expand query matching and customize ads and landing-page selection based on intent.

AI is therefore affecting both sides of paid search: what customers see and how advertisers reach them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Ads appear inside AI Overviews?

Yes. Eligible Search, Shopping, and Performance Max ads can appear within AI Overviews in supported markets. Ads can also appear above or below the AI-generated result.

Do advertisers need a separate AI Overview campaign?

No. Google does not currently require a separate campaign. Existing eligible campaigns may appear within AI Overviews when Google’s systems determine that the ad is relevant.

Are AI Overviews only informational?

No. Their presence on commercial searches is growing. Research from Semrush found a 71% increase in commercial-intent SERPs containing AI Overviews during the analyzed six-month period.

Do AI Overviews make Google Ads less important?

Not necessarily. Ads and AI Overviews increasingly coexist. The change is that advertisers need to understand how AI-generated information influences users before and around the paid click.

Should SEO and PPC teams analyze AI Overviews together?

Yes. SEO can identify what information Google surfaces, while paid media data reveals which queries have stronger commercial value. Combining both helps improve keyword prioritization, content, landing pages, and advertising decisions.

Compete Across the Entire Search Experience

AI Overviews are not replacing Google Ads. They are changing the environment in which paid search operates.

Brands now need to understand how paid ads, organic visibility, and AI-generated information work together during the same buying journey. The objective is not simply to appear more often, but to turn that visibility into qualified demand.
